Arizona: McCain to Help Schweikert Vs. Mitchell

Arizona Republican Dave Schweikert will be on Capitol Hill next week for a fundraiser, according to an invitation obtained by Roll Call. The event is being headlined by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who, on top of his own re-election efforts, is assisting other Republicans.

Schweikert is running his second race against Democratic Rep. Harry Mitchell, who is serving in a district that McCain and President George W. Bush carried in the past two presidential elections. Mitchell defeated Schweikert 53 percent to 44 percent in 2008.

The Schweikert event is slated for Sept. 28 at the Capitol Hill Club. Tickets cost $1,000 per political action committee and $500 per individual, with all proceeds going to the Schweikert campaign.

This will be the second fundraiser in a little more than a week that national political figures have participated in on behalf of Arizona Republicans.

On Friday, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) appeared at a Tucson fundraiser for 8th district nominee Jesse Kelly. Later that evening, he joined McCain and fellow Arizona GOP Sen. Jon Kyl for a fundraiser at the Phoenix-area home of former Vice President Dan Quayle. That fundraiser benefited three Republican House candidates, including Schweikert, 3rd district nominee Ben Quayle and 1st district nominee Paul Gosar.

The National Republican Congressional Committee has reserved TV time in the 5th district from Oct. 1 to 21. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has also reserved three weeks of airtime in the district.
