Hoyer: House Not Leaving This Week

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer on Tuesday shot down the suggestion that the House might adjourn at the end of this week, saying Members would definitely be in session at least through next week.

The Maryland Democrat told reporters at his weekly press conference that there was no way the House, which just came back into session Sept. 14, would complete its work by Friday. Such a scenario would require both chambers to pass identical versions of a continuing resolution by the end of the week to keep the government operating.

“The answer is no,” Hoyer said when asked whether there was any chance the House would adjourn this week.

The House is slated to leave town on Oct. 8, but aides have acknowledged that Democratic leaders are considering shaving a week off the schedule so that Members can go home early to campaign.
