Democrat Dan Maffei Gains 505 Votes

The resolution still may be weeks away, but it looks as though Rep. Dan Maffei is in a slightly better position than he was earlier in the week.

The incumbent Democrat has gained 505 votes through the first day and a half of absentee ballot counting, and he now trails Republican challenger Ann Marie Buerkle by 303 votes in the race for New York’s 25th district, according to updated figures released Thursday afternoon by Maffei’s campaign.

Local election officials are roughly half way through counting absentee ballots, a process that could take several more days. And of course, both campaigns are actively monitoring the process and have challenged dozens of ballots.

The courts will ultimately decide which challenged ballots are valid and whether to grant a full hand recount after all the absentee ballots have been counted. It is one of several races with results still outstanding.
