Updated Nov. 18, 4:49 p.m. Rep. Charlie Gonzalez was installed Thursday as head of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, which elected a new slate of leaders for the 112th Congress.

Gonzalez, who had been first vice chairman of the group, was uncontested for the chairman’s post. The Texas Democrat will succeed Chairwoman Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.). CHC chairmen typically serve only one term.

“Hispanics continue to be the fastest growing minority group in the U.S. and the CHC is faced with unique challenges and opportunities to work together to find a common ground for real solutions.” Gonzalez said in a statement. “As we rebuild our economy, create the much needed jobs, and build a world-class education system for our children, the CHC will continue to represent the Latino communities in order to create a strong and inclusive nation that values hard work and dedication to family.”

Rep. Rubén Hinojosa (D-Texas) was elected first vice chairman, Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) was elected second vice chairman, and Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-Calif.) was tapped as whip. All of the leadership posts were filled by acclamation.
