Speaker-designate John Boehner (R-Ohio) will announce a series of staff changes Friday, his office confirmed Thursday evening.

Brett Loper, an Advanced Medical Technology Association lobbyist and former House leadership staffer, will return to the Hill to join Boehner’s team as policy director next year, according to a Boehner aide. Loper will replace Policy Director Mike Sommers, who will serve as deputy chief of staff for leadership operations in the 112th Congress.

Sommers will share the title with current Deputy Chief of Staff Dave Schnittger, who will become Boehner’s deputy chief of staff for communications operations.

Both Sommers and Schnittger will serve under Boehner Chief of Staff Barry Jackson.

Jo-Marie St. Martin, Boehner’s general counsel and floor director, will also have a new title and portfolio, according to the aide, who declined to give further details.

The new roles will take effect Jan. 3.

Loper held many top-level staff positions during his tenure on the Hill, including staff director for the House Ways and Means Committee, chief of staff for then-Rep. Jim McCrery (R-La.), and chief of staff for then-Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas).

Loper briefly worked for Boehner in 2006 after the Ohio Republican won the Majority Leader position following DeLay’s resignation.
