HOH’s One-Minute Recess: Staffer Saves the Day

While most people were engrossed with their BlackBerrys during the morning commute on Thursday, staffer Zachary Mallove was busy being a hero.

Mallove, a staff assistant to Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), chased a mugger through the U Street Metro station on his way to work.

While riding the Green Line, Mallove heard a woman scream. He turned around and saw a young teen running off the train with the woman’s cell phone in hand.

The perpetrator “was sprinting up the escalator and I decided to go after him,” Mallove tells HOH.

He chased the teen through the station and finally caught up with him on the escaltor heading up to the corner of 13th and U streets Northwest.

“I grabbed his coat, told him to give me the phone and he handed it over. That was the extent of it,” he says.

Since there weren’t any police officers around, Mallove handed the woman her phone, boarded another train and headed into work as usual.

And they say chivalry is dead.

Old Pals

The Ohio Democrat and “Fair Game” star are longtime friends. Earlier this year, Kucinich gave Penn and his daughter, Dylan, a tour of the Capitol.
