Nevada Senate candidates Reps. Dean Heller (R) and Shelley Berkley (D) were statistically tied in a poll released Tuesday by Democratic firm Public Policy Polling.

Heller took 47 percent and Berkley 43 percent, with 10 percent undecided. The poll of 491 registered voters was conducted April 21-24 and had a 4.4-point margin of error.

The gap between the two House Members has closed considerably since Heller led 51 percent to 38 percent in January, before either had announced their candidacies or Sen. John Ensign (R) had announced he was not running for re-election.

Ensign has since announced his resignation, effective May 3. Heller is expected to be appointed by Gov. Brian Sandoval (R) to serve out the remainder of Ensign’s term through 2012.

Heller led 56 percent to 29 percent among independents and had a stronger hold on his party base than Berkley. He is also viewed more favorably overall than Berkley, with 43 percent holding a favorable opinion of Heller and 34 percent viewing Berkley favorably.
