Every year Hawaii celebrates King Kamehameha Day … and so does Washington, D.C.

On Tuesday, S.Con.Res. 16 was approved in both chambers allowing Emancipation Hall in the Capitol Visitor Center on Sunday to be the site of D.C.’s King Kamehameha Day celebrations.

HOH doesn’t have a schedule for the event, but we are told there will be leis of flowers draped over statues and hula dancers. We will repeat that: Hula. Dancers. In. The. Capitol. Sunday.

“Kamehameha is credited with unifying the eight major islands by the year 1810. Of course, the islands of Kauai and Niihau claim that they eluded him,” Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (D-Hawaii) said making a Hawaiian history joke on the House floor Tuesday.

The king was also credited with instituting the rule of law on the islands called “the Law of the Splintered Paddle.” (Yes!)

If you can’t make it to Emancipation Hall or one of the Hawaiian islands this weekend, never fear Kamehameha’s impressive statue is standing in Statuary Hall in the Capitol every day.

In other fun D.C.-Hawaii news, Rep. Dan Lungren’s (R-Calif.) daughter, who was married in D.C. over Memorial Day weekend, is off to Hawaii for her honeymoon.

“I believe [she] will actually still be there on the fifth of June,” Lungren said on the House floor Tuesday. “So she will see [the celebrations] up close and personal.”
