Huntsman to Join 2012 Field Next Week

Republican Jon Huntsman will announce his  presidential campaign June 21 in Jersey City, N.J., using the same Liberty State Park site where GOP icon Ronald Reagan held a famous campaign rally some 30 years ago.

Huntsman was scheduled to discuss his pending announcement Tuesday during an appearance in New York with Henry Kissinger at a forum on China. The forum was set to be live-streamed at Reuters.com at 1 p.m. Huntsman’s campaign plans, first reported by the Associated Press, were confirmed to Roll Call by a knowledgeable source.

Following his June 21 campaign announcement in New Jersey, Huntsman will travel to the crucial GOP primary states of Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina. Huntsman will also travel to Utah, where he served as governor before being tapped by President Barack Obama to serve as ambassador to China.

Reagan held a famous Labor Day campaign rally in 1980 at Liberty State Park, with the Statue of Liberty as a backdrop.
