A week after a national conservative group attacked Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) on the air in his home state, the Republican is fighting back with his own ad buy.

Lugar issued the first television commercial of his re-election campaign Tuesday — one week after the fiscally conservative Club for Growth began its statewide ad buy.

In the mostly straight-to-camera spot, Lugar criticizes President Barack Obama and emphasizes his Congressional experience. It includes seconds of footage showing Lugar with former President Ronald Reagan.

“President Obama needs to understand that for jobs to grow, business must expect to make a profit,” Lugar says in his ad. “Instead, he keeps pushing for taxes and regulation. He’s just wrong. For 35 years, I’ve battled for balanced budgets and less government.  I’ve helped beat tough times before. And we can do that again. And I hope you’ll agree that a veteran, fighting alongside our new recruits, will help.”

Lugar’s campaign did not release the size of the ad buy, but he has the funds for a media blitz if he wants it. The GOP Senator boasted almost $3.5 million in the bank at the end of June.

The Indiana Senator faces the first potentially serious primary challenge of his Congressional career — state Treasurer Richard Mourdock is collecting support from conservatives in hopes of ousting Lugar.

Rep. Joe Donnelly is running for the Democratic nomination.
