GOP Candidate Out; Lampson Could Run in Texas

Neither state Sen. Mike Jackson nor state Rep. Larry Taylor will seek retiring Rep. Ron Paul’s seat, putting the GOP field for the eastern Texas district in flux.

Jackson told Roll Call on Monday that he’s looking to run only in the newly drawn 36th Congressional district, calling the seat “a real good opportunity.” The longtime state lawmaker lives in the newly drawn 36th district, but a great deal of his legislative territory lies in Paul’s district.

Taylor was one of the first Republicans to express interest in Paul’s seat after the Congressman announced earlier this month that he would not run for another term. But in a statement released to the media last week, Taylor declined and said he’ll be “most effective” serving in the Legislature instead.

Republicans say former Rep. Steve Stockman and state Rep. Dennis Bonnen could still run for Paul’s seat. Former Rep. Nick Lampson (D) also told reporters earlier this month that he’s interested in the seat.
