Napolitano Announces Re-Election Bid in California

California Rep. Grace Napolitano announced Wednesday that she will seek re-election in the newly redrawn 38th district, a Hispanic-majority district in East Los Angeles.

The district includes much of the same area the seven-term Democrat currently represents, and it is even keeping the same number after the independent redistricting commission did a wholesale renumbering of the state’s districts. This district includes her longtime home of Norwalk, which she’s represented at multiple levels of government.

Napolitano’s decision to run in the 38th means Rep. Linda Sanchez (D), who lives on the southeastern border of the district, might need to run in the Long Beach-based 47th district. Rep. Laura Richardson (D) lives within that district but is running in a neighboring Compton-based district.

A Sanchez spokesman said the Congresswoman has not announced her intentions for next year.

Napolitano’s district is 61 percent Hispanic and has a nearly 2-to-1 Democratic voter registration advantage.

“I have been privileged to earn the trust of the voters and have represented the people of the 38th District as their voice in Washington to the best of my ability,” Napolitano said in a statement. “I am announcing this today so my constituents know I’m ready to continue to fight for our issues and for this great nation. I intend to continue to provide the best services to the residents of the 38th district.”

The redistricting commission released the new Congressional lines Friday and will vote on final adoption Aug. 15. However, there are possible legal challenges that could extend the redistricting process.
