HOH’s One-Minute Recess: Basketball Bonding
What would Jesus do? We haven’t a clue, but we can tell you what the group Dude Perfect would do: some basketball diplomacy … kind of.
Last week Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) blasted Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) on MSNBC’s “The Last Word.”
“Rick Perry and these other guys are allergic to science,” he said. (It’s true. Hives happen.)
This week Dude Perfect, a group of former and current students from Texas A&M University (Perry’s alma mater) who are Internet sensations because of their amaze-balls basketball trick shots, popped by Markey’s office.
Why? Well, they were hugely impressed with Markey’s Darth Vader video, which HOH wrote about a couple months ago.
In the Dude Perfect spot, Markey — a huge basketball fan — made a nice shot (swish!) and became an honorary member of the group, which is kind of like becoming an honorary Aggie and maybe a step toward finding some common ground with Perry.
Recently, Dude Perfect visited D.C., making some sick shots across the city, including near the Washington Monument, Ben’s Chili Bowl, the Lincoln Memorial and as close to the White House as it could get.
The group is not just about skipping around the country making crazy shots to wow friends and Members of Congress alike, though.
“We believe that nothing happens by accident, that God’s given us this platform for a reason and that we have an opportunity to make a serious impact on the lives of countless others all around the globe,” the group writes on its website. “Above all else, our ultimate goal is to glorify Jesus Christ in everything that we do.”
So it really is about love and basketball.
Markey spokesman Eben Burnham-Snyder says there is a religious angle to all this.
“As a Catholic and Celtics fan, Rep. Markey is aware that religion and community come in many forms,” he says. “Which is why he prays every year for another Celtics championship.”
