Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (Hawaii) announced Wednesday morning she will seek re-election to the 1st district rather than run for Senate.

The freshman Democrat’s decision sets up a rematch with former Rep. Charles Djou (R), who announced last week he was running for the seat he lost to Hanabusa in November. 

“I have heard every voice and considered every opinion,” Hanabusa said in a statement. “After much thought and much reflection, I have determined that I can best serve Hawaii by seeking reelection for a second term in the U.S. House of Representatives.”

Hanabusa has been in office for just eight months but was considering running against Rep. Mazie Hirono and former Rep. Ed Case in the Democratic primary for the seat of retiring Sen. Daniel Akaka (D). Hanabusa told Roll Call in April she would make a decision by the end of the year.

Hirono announced her candidacy in May and a month later was endorsed by EMILY’s List, an organization that works to elect female candidates who support abortion rights. By the end of June she held a 2-to-1 cash-on-hand advantage over Hanabusa.

Hanabusa said Wednesday that her Senate candidacy would have opened three of the state’s four seats in the House and Senate, and it would undermine efforts to preserve Hawaii-based programs.

“I hope that my continued service in Congress will support that stability and that the relationships I have developed will assist our state and our residents,” she said.
