Gary Peters Makes Race Against Hansen Clarke Official in Michigan

Rep. Gary Peters confirmed today that he will seek re-election in Michigan’s 14th district, forcing a face-off with fellow Democratic Rep. Hansen Clarke.

“Congressional districts are just lines on a map,” Peters said in a statement from his campaign. “I believe that regardless of where we call home, we all want the same things: economic security, fairness from government, and an honest chance to find success and happiness — I’ve spent my life fighting for these values.”

Republicans eliminated Peters’ north-suburban Detroit district when they redrew the Congressional map earlier this year. Peters has kept mum about where he’d seek re-election until this week, when he announced his bid for what he described as “greater Detroit’s new 14th district.”

Peters’ decision creates one of the most competitive primaries between two Members of Congress this cycle. Clarke announced last month he would seek re-election in the 14th district, which includes much of the freshman Democrat’s current territory.

In a brief Wednesday evening interview with Roll Call, Peters argued he’s represented half of the district already either in Congress or the Michigan state Senate. He also hailed the new district’s geographic and economic diversity.
