Kind Opts Out of Wisconsin Senate Race
Rep. Ron Kind officially took himself out of the Wisconsin Democratic Senate primary running today.
It was not a surprising announcement, with the La Crosse native’s 3rd district becoming safer via redistricting and with Rep. Tammy Baldwin already in the race. Baldwin has a national fundraising network to tap into and would have been favored in a matchup with Kind for the seat held by retiring Sen. Herb Kohl (D).
In a statement, Kind said he was urged to run but concluded, “Now is not my time to run for the U.S. Senate.” He also said a “divisive primary contest will not serve the interests of the state or the real needs of families.”
Republicans who have already announced their Senate campaigns include former Rep. Mark Neumann and Wisconsin Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald, while former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson is also expected to run.
Roll Call rates the Wisconsin Senate race as a Tossup.
