Grace Napolitano Backs Janice Hahn Over Laura Richardson in California

California Rep. Grace Napolitano stepped into a Member-vs.-Member race today, endorsing Rep. Janice Hahn over Rep. Laura Richardson in the Golden State’s redrawn 44th district.

All three Democrats represent Los Angeles-area districts, but Hahn and Richardson are running against one another next year in a top-two primary after the state’s independent redistricting commission cut up their current districts. Also running for the safely Democratic seat is Assemblyman Isadore Hall (D).

Hahn lives in the 44th, but the district includes little of the area she won in a July special election. Richardson does not live in the redrawn district, but it includes a significant portion of her current district.

The redrawn 44th district in South Los Angeles has a 49 percent Latino citizen voting age population and 28 percent African-American VAP. Napolitano is the second major Latino elected official in the area to endorse Hahn, following LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D).

Napolitano cited Hahn’s roots in the district as a city councilwoman and daughter of longtime LA County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn.

“All of this, in addition to her leadership skills and ability to find common-sense solutions to tough problems, makes her the best and ideal candidate,” Napolitano said.
