Former NFL wide receiver Jimmy Farris has returned home to run for Congress in Idaho’s 1st district.

Farris, a 33-year-old native of Lewiston, announced his campaign against freshman Rep. Raul Labrador (R) on Saturday at a Boise fundraiser for the Ada County Democratic Party, according to James Smart, vice chairman of the local party.

According to his NFL.com player profile, Farris played parts of six seasons for three teams, including three seasons with the Washington Redskins.

The Redskins team has produced other politicians in recent years, including Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) and Clint Didier (R), who ran for Senate in Washington state last year.

Smart called Farris an “articulate, straightforward young man” whom he believes can defeat Labrador. The freshman Republican knocked off Democrat Walt Minnick in 2010, two years after Minnick defeated a GOP incumbent.

But the district, which currently includes the western side of the state, will likely remain a difficult area for any Democrat to win following redistricting. Labrador raised $77,000 in the third quarter and has $138,000 in cash on hand.

Farris has set up a website — jimmyfarris.com. He also has a Twitter feed, on which he said: “Definitely looking forward to getting back in DC!!”
