The Government Printing Office has appointed a new inspector general.

On Monday, Public Printer Bill Boarman announced that Michael Raponi would be taking over the post held temporarily by Rodolfo Ramirez since May.

In his new role, Raponi will be charged with overseeing the office that was created in 1988 to “promote economy, efficiency and effectiveness in GPO’s programs and operations,” as well as to detect and prevent fraud and waste within the agency.

The GPO inspector general also submits regular reports to Congress on how the agency is fulfilling its mission, and he oversees audits and investigations within the organization.

Boarman said in a statement Monday that Raponi is well-prepared to take on the responsibilities the position requires.

“Michael Raponi brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to this important position,” Boarman said in a statement. “I look forward to working with [him] in assuring the efficient and effective performance of GPO’s mission on behalf of Congress, Federal agencies and the public we serve.”

Raponi, who starts work Nov. 21, comes to the GPO after serving four years as the deputy assistant inspector general for audit at the Labor Department.

A Capitol Christmas Tree

California will bring Christmas to Capitol Hill this year. The official Capitol Christmas tree, a staple of the holiday season in Washington, D.C., since 1964, is set to arrive from the Golden State on Nov. 28, Architect of the Capitol Stephen Ayers announced Monday.

The 65-foot Sierra white fir was harvested Sunday from the Stanislaus National Forest and is now en route to D.C., where it will sit on the West Front lawn.

It will be decorated with nearly 3,000 California-made ornaments, reflecting this year’s theme — “California Shines” — and showcasing California’s “rich cultural and ecological diversity.”

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) will light the tree at a ceremony on Dec. 6. Ayers will serve as master of ceremonies.

“This year’s Capitol Christmas tree … will stand as a symbol of strength and comfort during the season of peace and good will,” Boehner said in a statement.
