Who says Capitol Hill is going to the dogs? Well, the American Humane Association, for one, which took advantage of the House recess this week to call attention to dogs who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

The association set up in the Cannon House Office Building on Monday for its event “Tribute to War Heroes — On Both Ends of the Leash.”

Called out for special attention was Roselle, a guide dog honored posthumously for guiding owner Michael Hingson down 78 flights of stairs in the World Trade Center on 9/11. Hingson, who wrote “Thunder Dog” in honor of Roselle, who passed away this summer, was also on hand Monday.

On Friday, the Hallmark Channel gives the dogs their day in the sun when it televises the “American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards” from the Beverly Hilton hotel’s historic International Ballroom in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Celebrity judges and panelists include Victoria Stilwell of Animal Planet’s “It’s Me or the Dog,” Betty White, Martha Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg and Orlando Brown.
