Former Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan will not be running for Congress in Maryland’s newly drawn 6th district.

Duncan had been making calls as he considered a run, according to two sources.

The seat has become a hotbed of interest among Democrats. A new redistricting map radically redrew the 6th, endangering Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R) and making it much more likely for Democrats to flip the district this cycle.

According to the Washington Post, Duncan “is leaning toward backing” Montgomery County banker John Delaney, who is in the exploratory phase of his campaign.

Most eyes have been on state Sen. Robert Garagiola (D) as he quickly moved to set up his campaign after the new redistricting map was passed into law. Duncan was considered to be one of the strongest possible contenders in a Democratic primary.

In an interview today with the Post, Duncan complained about the perception that Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. drew the 6th to create a seat specifically for Garagiola, his political protégé.

“There is some resentment with how the district was set up, particularly in western Maryland, and I think Garagiola is going to have problems with that,” Duncan told the Post.

Former Montgomery County Councilwoman Duchy Trachtenberg is also running for the Democratic nomination.
