Former Rep. Christopher Carney (D) told supporters last week that he plans to explore a comeback bid for Congress, depending on Pennsylvania’s new Congressional map.

On Friday, Carney met with a dozen Keystone State political fundraisers, former donors and organized labor representatives to discuss a 2012 campaign, according to a source who attended the roundtable discussion at a downtown Philadelphia political consulting shop.

“As the discussion wrapped up, many of the attendees expressed that they are willing to make financial commitments to the campaign, even if it is solely for the purpose of seed money for further exploration of a run,” the source said.

Carney’s informal exploration comes as GOP state lawmakers are putting the finishing touches on the state’s new Congressional map. Republicans originally planned to release the new map Monday but now aim to release it at the end of this week.

Carney will not make a firm decision about running again until the map is released, the source cautioned.

“He’s 100 percent committed to returning to Congress if he doesn’t get completely wiped out in redistricting,” the source said.

The source cautioned that Carney will not challenge another Democrat under the new lines, but he could run against freshman GOP Reps. Lou Barletta or Tom Marino.

Carney lost re-election last year to Marino in the 10th district. Republicans are aiming to shore up Barletta, who represents a Democratic-leaning district, in their redraw.
