Jamie Benoit Drops Run Against Donna Edwards in Maryland

Rep. Donna Edwards has one fewer obstacle on her way to re-election.

Anne Arundel County Councilman Jamie Benoit will not be running against her in a Democratic primary in Maryland’s 4th district.

Benoit had given serious consideration to launching a campaign. Benoit is from Anne Arundel, an area new to the 4th district.

During redistricting, Edwards fought tooth and nail against the new map that took Montgomery County away from her district and replaced it with the more conservative Anne Arundel. Those comments irked Benoit and instigated his consideration of a run.

“I felt like she was trying to pick her constituents,” Benoit told Roll Call in November. “In my opinion, it works the other way around.”

The race will most likely be determined in the Democratic primary. Former Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Glenn Ivey is challenging Edwards in the primary and is perceived as a serious threat, but national activists are beginning to line up behind her.

Roll Call Politics rates this race as Safe Democratic.
