Joe Walsh Will Make Race Announcement Tonight

Rep. Joe Walsh plans to make an announcement about his re-election plans tonight in downtown Chicago, and GOP insiders expect the freshman Republican to declare he’s switching races.

“After spending the last week discussing his options with family, supporters, and party officials, Congressman Walsh believes the choice is clear,” his campaign wrote in a press release.

Roll Call first reported last week that Walsh was close to switching races to run in the 8th district, a heavily Democratic seat. Earlier this year, Walsh announced he would challenge fellow freshman Rep. Randy Hultgren (R) in the nearby 14th district, a safe Republican seat.

Walsh initially told reporters he would make an announcement Monday, but he said nothing about his re-election this week. Walsh’s staff has not responded to repeated inquiries seeking comment over the past week.
