Duberstein Picks Up Alibaba Group

The Duberstein Group has snagged a much talked-about client: Alibaba Group, a China-based e-commerce company that many observers say could be preparing to bid for Yahoo Inc.

The lobbying disclosure form filed with the Clerk of the House says that Duberstein Group lobbyists will be “monitoring issues affecting this business.” Duberstein was retained through New York’s Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.

According to news reports, Alibaba’s founder said this fall that he was interested in buying Yahoo, though the two enterprises are in talks over an Asian business deal.

The disclosure filing does not list the fees Duberstein is charging the new client, but the firm routinely collects $100,000 a quarter — $400,000 annually — from many of its clients, according to lobbying reports on file with Congress.

The K Streeters listed to represent Alibaba include Democratic lobbyist Michael Berman, the firm’s president and Daniel Meyer, a former chief of staff to ex-Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) and a former legislative affairs assistant to President George W. Bush. Also on the roster are top Democratic lobbyists Steven Champlin, Brian Griffin and Marti Thomas.
