Wally Herger to Retire

California Republican Rep. Wally Herger will announce today he is retiring from Congress, according to a local report.

The Flash Report, an influential California blog run by political consultant Jon Fleischman, first reported the news of Herger’s retirement late last night.

Herger  is serving his 13th term in an expansive Northern California district that extends north to the Oregon border from Sacramento.

After redistricting, the district added the state’s northeastern counties but remained solidly Republican. The Flash Report reported that state Sen. Doug LaMalfa (R) would run for Herger’s seat and use Herger’s longtime consultant, Dave Gilliard.

Herger will be the second California Republican to announce his retirement in the past three days, following Rep. Elton Gallegly’s announcement on Saturday.

A few more Republicans are on retirement watch in Southern California, including Reps. Jerry Lewis and David Dreier, whose districts were carved up in redistricting and who have still not said publicly whether they will run.

Twelve other House Members have announced their retirements so far this year. Another 11 are running for Senate and four more are seeking office outside of Congress. To see the full list of Members who are leaving check out Roll Call’s Casualty List.
