President Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee together brought in $68 million in the last three months of 2011.

“We had another strong quarter, and we continue to have more people giving to this campaign than any other in history,” Obama campaign manager Jim Messina wrote in an email to supporters today.

Obama’s announcement comes just one day after former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the frontrunner for the GOP nomination, announced he had his most successful fundraising quarter yet in the 2012 race.

Romney raised $24 million in the fourth quarter and ended last year with $19 million in cash on hand.

In a video message to supporters, Messina broke down the fundraising figures: The Obama campaign raised more than $42 million in the quarter, while the DNC collected more than $24 million. They raised an additional $1 million for the swing state victory fund.

Obama’s joint haul with the DNC is just a few million short of the party’s $70.1 million raised in the third quarter of 2011.

Candidates must file their campaign finance reports for the final quarter of 2011 by the end of January.
