Six months after 78-year-old Rep. Leonard Boswell (D-Iowa) was confronted by an armed intruder at his farmhouse near Lamoni, the two perpetrators have been sentenced.

According to a statement released today by Boswell’s office, David Palmer Dewberry was sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of robbery in the first degree before the Decatur County District Court.

Cody John Rollins, who pleaded guilty to the charge of “aiding and abetting an attempted burglary,” was sentenced to a prison term not to exceed 10 years.

The sentences come after Dewberry, wearing a ski mask and carrying a BB pistol, entered the Boswell home late one evening in July demanding money. Boswell, his wife, daughter and grandson were at home at the time.

Before his grandson was able to scare Dewberry away with a shotgun, some family members suffered scrapes and bruises, and Boswell came away with a broken rib.

Rollins was the getaway driver, authorities alleged, and he has admitted to planning the intrusion.

Law enforcement quickly apprehended both men after the incident.

In announcing the sentences today, the Boswell family also released a statement addressed to Dewberry.

“We are pleased that you have decided to do the honorable thing by pleading guilty to your crime and accepting your punishment after committing the terror that you put our family through that summer night,” the letter reads.

It continues: “While we understand that you have had a tough and tumultuous life, it is simply no excuse and your actions have no place in a civilized society. Your sinister motives and plans were appalling; it is by God’s grace that no one was seriously injured. We hope that you realize how lucky you are that you weren’t killed that night.

“We hope that during your incarceration … you can find the virtue of good judgment, and from there find the righteous path.”
