Yet another Capitol Hill-area eatery is calling it quits.

The Capital City Diner, which called the eastern fringe of the Atlas District home for the past two years, served its last plate of chicken and waffles this weekend, depriving area residents of a quirky diner-car refuge.

In November, Ba Bay, a modern Vietnamese restaurant near Eastern Market, abruptly closed.

According to an open letter on its website, the crew of the Capital City Diner said the decision to shut down was due to “rising costs, a declining economy, and a national chain ‘diner’ restaurant opening almost a stone’s throw away.” The “diner” referred to is a recently opened Denny’s.

The owners say they will “reformat our restaurant to move forward” but don’t give a time frame.
