At midnight, the Bangor Daily News broke the story: Maine Sen. Susan Collins (R) is engaged to Tom Daffron, chief operating officer of the Jefferson Consulting Group and a former top aide for Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska). The couple is planning a summer wedding somewhere in Maine.

“Congratulations to my friend Senator Susan Collins on her engagement to Tom Daffron,” fellow Maine Sen. Olympia Snowe (R) posted on Facebook.

“It is my pleasure to pass along the happy news that my boss, Senator Susan Collins, is engaged to be married to Mr. Tom Daffron,” Collins aide Mary Dietrich wrote in an email to Senators.

This is Collins’ first marriage and Daffron’s second. They met when they both worked for former Sen. William Cohen (R-Maine). Daffron also worked for former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) and was, among other things, a senior executive for the Baltimore Orioles.
