New Jersey Claims the Giants
Everyone loves a winner, and New Jersey’s Members of Congress are no different.
Rep. Steven Rothman (D) sent out a statement this morning congratulating the Super Bowl XLVI winners on their victory and practiced a little NFL redistricting in the process.
The statement began: “Congressman Steve Rothman (NJ-9), the Member of Congress who has the honor of representing the Giants …”
Obviously, Rothman is not from New York, but he does represent New Jersey’s 9th district, where the New York Giants’ stadium lives.
“Congratulations to the New Jersey Giants on a hard fought victory,” Rothman says in the statement. “Their win is an inspiration for us all and brings great honor to our state and Giants fans throughout our country. Go blue!”
Rothman’s renaming of the Giants seems to be de rigueur among the Jersey delegation.
Sen. Bob Menendez (D) hung a sign cheering the Giants in January, and Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D) will be hanging a sign congratulating the Giants this afternoon.
Lautenberg’s office is next to Sen. Charles Schumer’s (D-N.Y.).
Since we are nothing if not instigators, HOH got ahold of a New Jersey staffer and needled until we got this comment.
“Clearly … the only thing New York about the Giants is the N.Y. on their helmets,” the staffer tells HOH. “They play and practice in New Jersey … many of the players live in New Jersey and many of them are from the great state.”
New York Members, they have a compelling argument. You guys gonna let them get away with it?
