If Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) has her way, the lights will likely be going out for good in the faux solar retreats known as tanning salons.

DeLauro is pressuring the Food and Drug Administration to clamp down on fake-and-baking, firing off a strongly worded reminder Friday demanding that federal regulators finally move on safeguards proposed by anti-cancer advocates back in 2010.

“Though they are internationally recognized as carcinogens and their use is associated with a greater risk of skin cancer, tanning beds are currently classified in the same device category as band aids and tongue depressors,” DeLauro marvels in a prepared statement.

The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection made its case against recreational tanning in 2003, arguing effectively for the closing of all nonsupervised sun beds to children, the fair-skinned, freckled people, those with moles, makeup wearers, individuals on medication and anyone named George Hamilton. (OK, we made that one up.)
