Plight of the Self-Nominated

Columbia University economist Jeffrey Sachs withdrew his self-nomination to be World Bank president last week. Good move, since President Barack Obama said Friday that he was picking Dartmouth College President Jim Yong Kim to replace Robert Zoellick.

Sachs campaigned hard for the post, leading to a lot of Twitter traffic, most of which mentioned that he was friends with Bono. So it was fitting Sachs responded on Twitter: “Jim Kim is a superb nominee for [World Bank].”

One HOH reader had this to say: “Sachs had ‘self-nominated’ but is gracious in defeat.”
