By all accounts, things got a little weird when a certain head-scratching number manifested as part of a raffle held Saturday night during the Sleepy Hollow Citizens’ Association’s “A Taste of the Hollow” event.

But from everything we’ve gathered, general miscommunication — not actual malice — clouded remarks that Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) made about his fellow lawmaker, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.).

An anonymous tipster attempted to stir the pot by relaying a tale in which Connolly plucked the winning ticket, the sequence being 6-6-6, and derisively invoked Bachmann’s name.

Connolly Chief of Staff James Walkinshaw confirmed that Connolly had name-checked his colleague, but he insisted it was all in fun. On seeing the nefarious numeral, Walkinshaw said Connolly quipped, “Don’t tell Michele Bachmann we drew that number” — an attempted inside baseball gibe meant to reference Bachmann’s deep-seated suspicions about  former GOP presidential hopeful Herman Cain’s controversial “9-9-9 plan.”

Not that anyone necessarily caught Connolly’s attempt at humor.

Mason District Supervisor Penny Gross assured HOH that she was the one who actually pulled the winning ticket (one of 32 prize drawings that night) and got the satanic references rolling.

“When I pulled the ticket and announced it, I said, ‘Ooooooh, it’s 6-6-6. … Well, maybe it’s 9-9-9,’” she explained. The crowd quickly nixed that idea, demanding that Gross stick with the original call. Gross denied hearing Connolly’s joke, asserting that there was too much cross-talk happening to actually make out any intelligible comments.
