Workhorses and Showhorses
The Humane Horsewoman of the Year, Sen. Mary Landrieu, will raise her glass against animal cruelty this morning.
The Louisiana Democrat will be joined by Willie Nelson’s daughter and granddaughter, Amy and Raelyn Nelson, 1970s pinup queen Bo Derek and Lorenzo Borghese, from season 9 of “The Bachelor,” for the Horses on the Hill event in the Russell Senate Office Building.
Schoolchildren and young people who ride horses will join them in an effort to educate lawmakers not to kill or eat horses.
Unfortunately for us, there will be no horses attending the event to really drive that point home.
This isn’t the first time Landrieu and horses have found themselves on the same side of an issue.
Earlier this year, she was named the 2011 Humane Horsewoman of the Year by the Humane Society of the United States.
The Horses on the Hill event is to urge lawmakers to support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, which would stop horses from being eaten in the United States or shipped out of the country to be slaughtered.
No word on whether Landrieu and friends will demand that whiskey be provided for their men as well as beer for their horses.
We hope they will, but we assume they will not.
