Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) reached a new milestone in his recovery today, when his family announced that the first-term Senator would move home to continue his recuperation from a January stroke.

In a statement provided by Kirk’s office, the Senator’s family said he will continue his recovery as an “out-patient” at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. He will live with various members of his family during this time, his office confirmed.

“We are happy to say that after suffering a stroke in January, Mark has progressed to the point where he can move home with his family,” the statement read. “He has begun a rigorous walking study program to further his mobility and independence while maintaining his schedule with staff. We are grateful for the wonderful doctors and personnel at the RIC for their care of Mark, and to the residents of Illinois who have given him privacy and time to heal. We also thank everyone who has shared their prayers and wishes for his return to the U.S. Senate as soon as possible.”

Kirk checked himself into a northwest suburban Chicago hospital after suffering a stroke on Jan. 21.

Kirk transferred to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago on Feb. 10 to continue his recovery.
