Food Trucks Invade East Capitol Hill

Most Capitol Hill folks know that, absent a D.C. United soccer match, RFK Stadium and its endless series of parking lots can get a little desolate.

The DC Food Truck Association aimed to change that over the weekend, bringing its Curbside Cookoff: Trucko de Mayo to Lot 3 of the RFK grounds on, you guessed it, Saturday, Cinco de Mayo.

Co-hosted by DC Events and Centerplate, Saturday’s event featured about three dozen food trucks, running the gamut from favorites such as Fojol Brothers and Curbside Cupcakes to lesser-known truckies such as Cajunators and Tops Truck.

The noshing lasted from noon until 9 pm. Admission was free, live bands played music and two bars served up beers for the masses to wash down the D.C. Slices pizza, Big Cheese Vermont cheddar grilled-cheese sandwiches, Hula Girls’ mixed plates and Dangerously Delicious Pies, among others.

Attendance numbers were hard to come by, although the lines at trucks such as TaKorean and the filled-to-the-brim trash bins in the late afternoon suggested a decent number of mobile eaters.

“It’s been pretty good,” said Asher Huey, who was manning the DC Food Truck Association’s information booth, although he didn’t have exact figures. Still, on a day that threatened rain and featured area bars’ fascination with Cinco de Mayo specials and the Kentucky Derby, it was quite a departure from the typically empty parking lot this stretch of eastern Capitol Hill features.
