Former Rep. Dave Weldon (R), a physician who served in Congress from 1995 to 2009, today announced a long-shot bid for Senate in Florida.
In the Republican primary, Weldon faces frontrunner, Rep. Connie Mack IV, who has been endorsed by everyone from Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) to presumptive GOP White House nominee Mitt Romney and former Sen. George LeMieux, fighting an insurgent campaign for the nomination. Retired Army Col. Mike McCalister (R) also is running.
Roll Call rates the race as Leans Democratic. Two-term Sen. Bill Nelson is expected to outperform President Barack Obama in this swing state.
The filing deadline is June 8. The primary will be held Aug. 14.
