One Berry Important Cause

The Wisconsin delegation might not agree on who deserves to be governor, but today it’ll lock arms around one parochial certainty: Cranberries should be above the law.

Echoes of “Pizzegetable-gate” are still reverberating through the Capitol. Those  voices will now be joined by the nutritional standards deniers in the nascent Congressional Cranberry Caucus.

The bipartisan, bicameral group, dominated by the Massachusetts delegation, will join cranberry producers in declaring their goods “an exception in the realm of sugar sweetened beverages and added sugar.”

They’ll argue the health benefits of the North American superfood outweigh the sweeteners dumped on the naturally tart fruit. To wit, an 8-ounce glass of cranberry juice cocktail trumps a comparable serving of Coke in terms of sugary goodness (30 grams to 26 grams, respectively). But will the public swallow this latest PR effort?
