Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney raised $76.8 million in May, easily surpassing the more than $60 million raised by President Barack Obama during the same period.

Romney’s May fundraising haul included funds contributed to his presidential campaign, the Republican National Committee and Romney Victory, a joint fundraising committee set up by the former Massachusetts governor’s campaign and the RNC. The Romney campaign and the RNC said they finished the month with a combined $107 million in cash on hand, according to a Romney campaign press release.

The Obama campaign revealed its May fundraising numbers via its Twitter account, saying the “more than $60 million” it brought in was a combined effort of the president’s re-election team and the Democratic National Committee. In separate tweets, the Obama campaign said that more than 572,000 donors contributed to the re-election effort in May, including more than 147,000 first-time givers.

Of the contributions received by the Obama campaign and the DNC last month, 98 percent clocked in at less than $250 for an average donation of just less than $55. The Romney campaign wasn’t far behind in small donations, announcing that 93 percent of all contributions across its three committees were $250 or less, including nearly 297,500 donations received in amounts of less than $250. Of the $76.8 million received by Romney, the RNC and Romney Victory, $12 million came from donors who gave less than $250, the campaign said.
