Commandeering the North Dakota Way

What is the North Dakota Way? It’s the idea of commandeering your opponent’s slogan and using it against him.

For months, North Dakota Republican Rep. Rick Berg has campaigned under the slogan, “The North Dakota Way.”

But for some crazy reason, Berg, who is running for retiring Sen. Kent Conrad’s (D) seat, took a page out of former Speaker Newt Gingrich’s shuttered campaign playbook and didn’t buy the URL. Oops.

Several months ago, Gingrich’s campaign forgot to buy NewtGingrich.com, so the kids over at the Democratic super political action committee American Bridge 21st Century helped themselves.

On Monday — one day before the primary — Berg’s Democratic opponent and former North Dakota Attorney General Heidi Heitkamp took advantage of website oversight and bought NorthDakotaWay.com and TheNorthDakotaWay.com.

The site isn’t as snarktastic as American Bridge’s Gingrich send-up. It does provide comparison between what Berg — pictured holding a wad of cash — promised his constituents and what the Congressman voted for while in Washington.
