Every week, HOH catches up with a Member of Congress through five questions. This week, Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.) talks about Rodney King’s memory, martial arts moves and what she likes about Will Smith.

Q: If you could star in the remake of any movie, which one would it be and why?

A: While I enjoy movies with a strong female lead, I also enjoy a good action or political thriller. If there was a remake of “Independence Day,” I’d like to play Will Smith’s character. He was a team player who helped save the world with his intelligence and wit. What could be more fun than that?

Q: You have a brown belt in tae kwon do and in hapkido. If you could get in the ring with any martial artist, who would it be and how long do you think you’d last?

A: Bruce Lee. That’s a tough question, I’m sure he’d be a formidable opponent.

Q: Who’s your favorite actor?

A. That’s a tough one. I have so many friends and actors in the business that I admire, it’s hard to pinpoint just one.

Q: What nonfiction book are you reading right now?

A: “Do Not Ask What Good We Do” by Robert Draper.

Q: Rodney King, who became the face of the LA Riots in 1992, died this month. What legacy does  he leave behind for the people of Los Angeles and of your district?

A: The videotape beating was a catalyst for change in the Los Angeles Police Department. While it took many years for the change to occur, many people in the community finally felt vindicated that a video tape finally revealed what was a regular occurrence.
