The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee made a significant show of support today for Rep. Shelley Berkley, announcing a $2.3 million reservation of television time in Nevada for the fall.

The announcement comes two days after the Ethics Committee announced a formal investigation into whether the Democrat used her influence in Congress to benefit her husband’s interests.

Berkley is challenging Republican Sen. Dean Heller in a race that will help decide control of a closely divided Senate. Heller launched a new campaign ad today targeting Berkley on the ethics investigation.

The state is one of the DSCC’s top targets, and the committee previously ran Spanish-language radio ads targeting Heller. The committee will likely move money around in the closing weeks of the cycle as races become more or less competitive.

“Shelley Berkley is a proven fighter for Nevadans and we are ready to win this race,” DSCC Executive Director Guy Cecil said in a statement.

While there has been no indication Democrats would seek a new candidate in light of the investigation, the Las Vegas Sun’s Jon Ralston reported that the National Republican Senatorial Committee sent a letter to the Nevada secretary of state’s office requesting clarification about whether a party can switch its candidate on the general election ballot at this point in the cycle. NRSC chief counsel Sean Cairncross stated in the letter that Nevada’s election code held that no changes can be made after June 29.

Larry Lomax, Clark County registrar of voters, confirmed to Roll Call that there can be no further changes to the general election ballot.
