Jill Biden, Dave Eggers and the Write Thing

Dr. Jill Biden will join Dave Eggers to Do the Write Thing on Oct. 2.

Vice President Joseph Biden’s wife will be speaking at the 826DC and 826 National’s fundraiser, to be held at the Westin-Georgetown starting at 7 p.m, with a VIP reception that kicks off at 6:30 p.m.

Joining Biden and Eggers will be Ethiopian-born author Maaza Mengiste, the author of “Beneath the Lion’s Gaze.”

Tickets for the event start at $150 for general admission and $300 for “very important people” tickets. Young professionals, there are $100 tickets for you, but they are limited.

826DC is the newest of the eight branches of 826 literacy centers across the country. The 826 Valencia was the first of the tribe, having opened its doors a decade ago. The centers were started by Eggers and educator Nínive Calegari and specialize in drop-in tutoring sessions, field trips, workshops (for every ages group) and in-school programs.

In D.C., the center is quartered at the Museum of Unnatural History on 14th Street Northwest by the Columbia Heights Metro.

The Museum of Unnatural History stores “the surrealist of surreal artifacts from times long past, as well as innovative products for an unnatural future.” Like the sister stores in Brooklyn, home of the Superhero Supply Store, and San Francisco’s only Pirate Supply Store, all proceeds go to the local writing programs.
