Missouri Senate candidate Sarah Steelman gave her campaign $100,000 on Friday, according to a Federal Election Commission filing.

Steelman, a former state treasurer who has struggled to raise money, had already loaned her campaign $400,000 this cycle.

While she ended June with $562,000 in cash on hand, Steelman’s campaign spent more than it took in during the second quarter.

Steelman’s spokesman didn’t immediately have a comment on why the candidate had given herself the financial infusion.

Steelman faces Rep. Todd Akin (Mo.) and businessman John Brunner in the Aug. 7 GOP primary to take on vulnerable Sen. Claire McCaskill (D).

Brunner, for his part, had contributed almost $4.8 million to his campaign by the end of June. He ended the second quarter with a paltry $183,000 in cash on hand.

Akin, who has neither loaned nor contributed any money to his campaign, ended June with $1.4 million in the bank.

In other campaign news, Akin today picked up the endorsement of conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly, the president and founder of Eagle Forum.

“Todd Akin is a principled leader who has championed the issues of pro-life, traditional marriage, and sound economics all through his years of service in the Missouri State Legislature and in Congress,” she said in a statement released by the Akin campaign. “His convictions are strong because he lives them out in his daily life.”
