GOP Might Call Democrats’ Bluff on Typo

House Republicans are strongly considering going ahead with a regulatory moratorium bill that includes a major typo, forcing Democrats to object to fixing it, GOP aides said.

“We will act to fix this at the earliest opportunity,” House Rules Committee spokesman Doug Andres said.

Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) surprised the GOP when he told reporters this morning that Democrats would not consent to fixing the typo. The two parties had been discussing a deal on Tuesday night.

If Democrats do object, the House might pass the bill anyway, typo and all. If the bill is taken up by the Senate, which is extremely unlikely, the error could be fixed in the enrolling process.

Andres noted that Republicans let Democrats fix a typo in one of their bills in June 2010.
