Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) has been admitted to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for treatment of “depression and gastrointestinal issues,” according to a statement released by the facility late Friday evening.

“Further information will be released as Congressman Jackson’s evaluation proceeds,” the statement said.

The release came after the Chicago Sun-Times reported that Jackson was transferred from a facility in Tucson, Ariz., to the Minnesota medical center.

The Mayo Clinic is one of the most highly regarded medical facilities in the world. The clinic says that more than a million individuals seek treatment there each year.

The Jackson family had come under pressure from other lawmakers to disclose more details about the lawmaker’s condition and his whereabouts. Several Democratic Party leaders, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (Md.) and Jackson’s home-state colleague, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, had publicly asked Jackson to clarify his status.

Jackson’s office announced he was taking a leave of absence for “exhaustion” on June 10. A July 11 statement characterized Jackson’s condition as a “mood disorder,” but did not provide additional details, which fueled more speculation.

“Congressman Jackson and his family are grateful for the outpouring of support and prayers that have been received throughout his care,” the Mayo statement said.
