An internal poll that Rep. Ron Barber’s (D-Ariz.) campaign released today showed the incumbent has a solid lead over retired Air Force Col. Martha McSally as they head into the fall election.

Barber has the support of 53 percent of respondents, while 40 percent said they backed McSally. Both are their parties’ likely nominees.

Forty-two percent of those surveyed were able to identify McSally. Twenty-two percent had a favorable impression of her, while 10 percent view her unfavorably.

“Change is the nature of politics, but voters in this district have embraced Ron Barber and he will be very difficult to beat in November,” the polling memo states.

“Congressman Barber and Washington Democrats spent millions on TV, in the mailbox and on radio only a few weeks ago and can barely squeak by the 50 percent mark,” McSally spokesman Christian Morgan wrote in an email. “Martha’s campaign is getting ready and, with 97 days until the General Election, she is within striking distance.”

The poll included 503 likely voters and was conducted July 17-22. The survey had a 4.4-point margin of error.
