Striking a Pose For Marriage Equality

Team NOH8 is back popping flash bulbs today, offering lawmakers opposed to California’s ban on same-sex marriage (Proposition 8) the opportunity to not flash their pearly whites, in solidarity with those affected by the ban.

The advocates for equality swung through town earlier this year and were joined by a handful of House Democrats who slapped the signature duct tape across their mugs. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (Ohio) was the first to face the cameras; Reps. Adam Schiff (Calif.), Earl Blumenauer (Ore.), Judy Chu (Calif.), Bill Keating (Mass.), Barbara Lee (Calif.), Jared Polis (Colo.), Jackie Speier (Calif.), Niki Tsongas (Mass.) and Lynn Woolsey (Calif.) and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D.C.) filed through thereafter.

Schiff is leading the anti-LGBT-discrimination charge this time around.

“I believe that marriage equality should be the law of the land,” he tells HOH, praising NOH8’s ongoing efforts and the 30,000 supporters who have “voiced their belief that everyone should have the same rights, regardless of their race, religion or sexual orientation.”

Schiff has recruited about a dozen colleagues who are planning to participate in the closed portrait session this time around. The tentative RSVPs (schedule permitting) include Democratic Reps. Suzanne Bonamici (Ore.), Mike Capuano (Mass.), David Cicilline (R.I.), John Conyers (Mich.), Ted Deutch (Fla.), Keith Ellison (Minn.), Sam Farr (Calif.), Raúl Grijalva (Ariz.), Zoe Lofgren (Calif.), Jim McDermott (D-Wash.), Jim McGovern (Mass.), Jerrold Nadler (N.Y.) and John Yarmuth (Ky.).

Ready for your close-up?

NOH8 is planning to snap pics of supportive House politicians from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Cannon 402. Senators pictures occur from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. across from the Hart Senate Office Building, at the FCNL building, 245 Second Street NE.

The only caveat: “Photos are best when the subject is wearing a white shirt of some sort,” NOH8’s shutterbugs suggest.
