Two polls released Wednesday show Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D) has made progress in her race against former Gov. Tommy Thompson (R) for the state’s open Senate seat.

A Marquette University Law School poll released Wednesday showed Baldwin leading Thompson by a 9-point margin. Fifty percent of likely voters said they favored her, while 41 percent said they backed Thompson. It is a complete reversal from Marquette’s mid-August poll, which showed Thompson with a 9-point lead. Republicans contend that this latest Marquette poll oversamples Democrats.

Also new: a Quinnipiac/New York Times/CBS poll that showed the Wisconsin Senate race to be much closer — a dead heat, in fact, at 47 percent each for Baldwin and Thompson. Compared with its own Aug. 23 poll, when Thompson had a 6 percent lead, this Quinnipiac poll is also an improvement for Baldwin.

The Quinnipiac poll had 1,485 likely voter respondents with a margin of error of 2.5 points. The survey was conducted Sept. 11-17.

The Marquette poll was a telephone survey Sept. 13-16. The margin of error was 3.8 points and 705 registered voters were surveyed. There were 601 “likely voters” and the margin of error in that group was 4.1 points.
